City port basin has been expanded following the Government’s decision

At its session held on 21 May 2020, the Government of the Republic of Croatia, adopted a Decision amending the Decision on the establishment of the Port of Zadar Authority, following the proposal of the Port of Zadar Authority’s Management Board of 15 April 2020 which made the decision to suggest to the Government the amendment of the act on the Zadar port area in a way to expand the borders of the City port basin. City port basin was expanded in accordance with the Decision on the adoption of the fourth amendment to the City of Zadar Physical Plan dated 23 December 2019, which entered into force on 2 January 2020. This decision created the preconditions for amending the Decision on the establishment of the Port of Zadar Authority in the part of the City port basin.

„The Port of Zadar Authority needs new berths because of the crowds during the summer months. This is the reason why we initiated the expansion of the City port. The reconstruction of the City port will take place in three parallel phases. In the first phase we will perform the reconstruction of the Coast of Krešimir, in the second phase we will extend the existing pier by 15 meters, and in the third phase we will reconstruct the Liburnian Coast. In this way, we will additionally alleviate the congestion in the City port, but also open the possibility for berthing the high-speed lines to Rijeka and Pula. The new extended pier should serve as a direct connection between Gaženica and Peninsula, City port and Borik. We also plan to introduce a hybrid boat with diesel and electric propulsion and this is another of our projects for which we will apply for EU funds. This would also ensure the charging of the ship's battery and the construction of a photovoltaic plant in Gaženica. We are pushing to realise this project because we want to be recognised as a green port” said Robert Škifić, following the Government’s Decision.

This decision enables the creation of new traffic areas and the introduction of the high-speed line intended for maritime passenger traffic on the Zadar – Preko route, as the most frequent line connecting one island community with its mainland centre. This is a line that has so far been exposed to significant traffic restrictions in the City port area due to other high-speed lines to the islands of Silba, Ist, Iž, Olib, Premuda, Dugi otok and others. Also, it increases the general safety of maritime traffic in the entire City port basin, especially during the summer season. The basin will be arranged, the defined coastal area expanded, and the designated passenger high-speed lines will be transferred to a newly arranged area.
